Francesco Mercadante: The Alchemist of Liquid Light Born in 1968 in Cutro, Calabria, and now living in Reggio Emilia, Francesco Mercadante is an artist who combines the precision of restoration and interior decoration with a painterly photographic vision. His passion began at nine, among the golden wheat fields of Calabria, when his father gave him a Kodak Instamatic and a blue bicycle: tools of freedom that led him to seek ‘scenes to capture’ and discover a nature that called and inspired him. The Search for Material and the Ritual of Glass Mercadante's artistic path is marked by a constant search for the “consistency” of the image. Starting from the use of earth pigments, oxides, and spatulas in painting, the artist translated this manual approach into street photography, arriving at a unique, identifiable style. Rejecting digital perfection, Francesco places a hand-crafted frosted glass filter between the lens and the world. This process transforms photography into a ritual: by manually rotating the filter, he enters a “new world,” a dimension in which reality melts and the urban scene is transfigured into vibrant, liquid plates of color. Recognition and Major Exhibitions This poetics reached its peak in 2024 with the solo exhibition “Il colore della gente” at Arcus Art Gallery Lab in Reggio Emilia, accompanied by the book of the same name published by Corsiero Editore. His works, evoking the dynamism of Ernst Haas and the transparency poetry of Saul Leiter, have received international recognition, including selections by Vogue Italia and coverage in Marie Claire. 2024 also marked his institutional consecration: after exhibiting in important Italian venues (from the Chamber of Deputies to Maschio Angioino), he was awarded the Biennale Arte e Cultura Prize at Matera Art Festival, in collaboration with the Accademia Internazionale dei Dioscuri. Recent Developments His institutional trajectory continues into 2026: by invitation of the cultural association Art Global, Mercadante presented the work “Tramonto eterno” at the prestigious Library of the Senate “Giovanni Spadolini” in Rome. As a confirmation of his global relevance, his entire visual and photographic archive was officially deposited at the Thomas J. Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York.
